The air conditioner in your home is critical to keeping it comfortable, especially when the weather outdoors is unpleasant. Over time, though, your machine may not work as well as it used to and will use more energy to keep the home cool. You may also notice your energy bills rising, which means you’ll be spending more money to keep your air conditioner running.
If you want to avoid this spiral, you may want to start cleaning your air conditioner on a regular basis and getting HVAC professionals, like Howard Air technicians, to perform preventative maintenance on your unit at least once a year. Let’s take a closer look at some of the things you can do to keep your machine running like new.
Clean Evaporator Coils
If you have a brush that is soft, you can use it to eliminate dust on the coil of your machine. This dust will typically contain particulates that are in your home, such as pollen, so wearing a mask is recommended. You will need to use a specific cleaner to avoid doing damage to the coil, such as coil cleaner.

Clean Drain Pans
Once you’ve cleaned the coil, you can clean the drain pan. Hot water combined with soap is good for this part, along with bleach to sanitize the area. Make sure the drain is clean when pouring the solution; if you see clogging, you may have to call an HVAC technician.
You’ll also need to keep your unit clean on the outside as well by getting rid of debris around the fins, coil, and the unit itself. By taking these steps, your unit will be cleaner and blowing more efficiently than it has ever since its last HVAC inspection by a licensed technician.
